5 Reasons You Should Hire a DJ For Your Wedding

We’re right at the start (or the middle depending on your preference) of the holiday season, and love is in the air! All kinds of grand gestures of romance come along with that, most of all getting engaged.

After the dust of excitement settles, the planning starts. For most of us this means looking for ways to cut back on expenses. Trust me, I just got married and saving money was a part of every decision we made.

When reviewing advice and options, one of the most common suggestions we found was to ditch the DJ and do your own music for your wedding. As a DJ myself I was deeply offended (not really), but most of all it’s terrible advice in my opinion. If you’re trying to decide what to do here, please allow me to lay out 5 reasons why hiring a DJ is the better way to go.

1 - Variety of Music

When putting together a playlist, you’re most likely going to start going through your own music library. Maybe you’ve even got a couple of killer Spotify playlists to pick through. The point is for the most part you will be fairly limited in your selection, where any DJ worth talking to is going to have a deep catalog to choose from. This opens up the ability to branch out to artists or genres that you may not have thought of, which leads me to…

2 - Reading the Room

Most people when planning the soundtrack to their big day have an idea of how they want it to go. That plan rarely stays on course. I can’t tell you how many weddings I’ve done where the couple hands me their playlist or suggestions and we change directions halfway through the night. Sure, you can put together a list of your favorite songs, but having a DJ can save you when those songs aren’t working or the mood needs shifting. Let them save the day. They love that.

3 - Less Wedding Day Stress

As you’re going through your checklist and getting things in order, it’s pretty clear that there is a lot to worry about on your wedding day. On top of everything, do you really want to rent/buy speakers, schedule out music for the entire night, coordinate announcements and order of events, and worry about keeping everything on schedule that night? I didn’t think so. You know who DOES want to do that for you? A DJ.

4 - No Interference

On top of all the duties listed above, a DJ can act as a filter for all of those requests that come in, knowing all of them do NOT need to make the cut. In the event that you don’t hire someone and you set up your music on an iPod, what’s stopping that cousin with “really good taste in music” from taking over? Don’t do that to yourself. He’s the only one who thinks “Master of Puppets” is the perfect love song.

5 - Experience Pays Off

A DJ has seen just about every situation good or bad that you can think of. You should meet with them at least once before the big day and bounce some of your ideas off them. Hey, maybe they’re all great and they’ll all work! A seasoned DJ will be able to either weed out the options that won’t make for the best night possible, or fine tune those ideas to make your evening everything you hoped it would be.

At the end of the day, you know what you want your day to be and you know your budget. Who am I to tell you how to spend your money? Here’s what I will say…I do this all the time. When I got married, it would have been really easy (and cheaper) for me to put together a playlist on my own. I didn’t…and it was a great night…thanks to a DJ.

What to Tell Your DJ

Hiring a DJ is stressful!  I get it!

You need to figure out how this person will set and guide the mood for an event that you poured your heart and soul (and money!) into.  Will they pronounce your wedding party correctly?  Do they understand what vibe you're going for?

Brides.com has a great resource of what your DJ should know to help take the stress off your wedding.

These are just some of the things that I'll bring up when we meet for your consultation so I can do what I can to help you.
